As you may know, we built Cart2Quote because we were missing a good B2B module for Magento. This frustrated us, and the birth of Cart2Quote became a fact. During this build, not only did our love for Magento as a platform grow further, but it also ensured that we know the program inside and out, so nowadays we can design, build, and support even better e-commerce platforms. We love Magento, and that is true for more people every year. Let’s take a look at Magento’s 2020 in numbers.
In most cases, 1% is not an impressive number. But when you talk about the internet as a whole, it’s a completely different story. With 1.5 billion websites, you can imagine what that means when 1% runs on the same platform. Quite impressive, especially considering that Magento is used solely for e-commerce purposes, unlike other major platforms.
Again, a number that at first glance doesn’t seem that impressive. But that 1.9% equals more than 250,000 e-commerce platforms. This makes Magento the second most popular platform in the world. When we look only at e-commerce platforms, the market share is 12%. This share is growing: since 2011, Magento’s market share has been steadily increasing, nearly doubling in 2017 and 2018. You can also see this in the number of migrations; about 7,500 merchants switched to Magento from another platform in 2019.
If we look at the 10,000 largest e-commerce platforms based on website traffic, 16% run on Magento. In the US and Canada, 20% of the top 1000 webshops are built with Magento, making it the most popular software in that region. By the way, Magento has held the #1 spot for the past four years. If we only look at B2B webshops, Magento is also #1, with a market share of 14%. What makes us particularly proud: The Netherlands ranks #3 worldwide in terms of Magento usage.
Every year, more than $155 billion in transactions take place via Magento webshops. This amount is believed to grow to $224 billion by the end of 2020. It’s not surprising when you consider that the expected growth of online shoppers served by Magento in 2020, compared to 2016, is 200%. Additionally, more than 200,000 Magento developers work for brands like Ford, Nike, Coca-Cola, Liverpool FC, Bulgari, Pepe Jeans, and Land Rover.
