Batao is a gelatinized form of a Dutch (Germanic) tribal name, likely related to Batavi. Like many Dutch tribal names, the meaning is rooted in geographical location and derived from two elements: bat, meaning good or excellent, and avo, meaning land. In short, the tribal name means “the people of the excellent land.”
